Early Orthodontic Care for Children
These often include the following questions: Do I really need to spend money on my kid's teeth? Here again is another question that parents frequently have about orthodontic treatment for children. The American Association of Orthodontists suggests that children should first see an orthodontist at around age seven. At this appointment, we will determine whether or not your child needs orthodontic treatment.Orthodontic treatment which begins at an early age (Phase One) typically starts at around age nine to ten, while Phase Two begins around age 11 and continues upwards into adulthood. Early treatment is meant to direct jaw growth, fix bite problems and space out the to-be permanent teeth, reducing the need for extractions later on.

Signs Your Child May Need Early Orthodontic Treatment
Watch for these indicators that your child could benefit from early orthodontic care:
- Losing baby teeth too early or too late (children typically start losing teeth around age five and have all permanent teeth by about age 13)
- Difficulty chewing or biting food
- Mouth breathing
- Thumb or finger sucking beyond age five
- Speech difficulties
- Protruding teeth where the upper and lower teeth extend outward
- Teeth that do not align properly or fail to meet
- Jaw shifting when opening or closing the mouth (crossbites)
- Crowded front teeth around ages seven or eight

Orthodontic Problems and the Importance of Early Treatment
Orthodontic issues like crowded teeth, gaps, jaw growth problems, protruding teeth, and misaligned bites can be inherited or caused by injuries, thumb-sucking, or early/late loss of baby teeth.
Since jaw growth slows by the end of the teenage years, adult orthodontic treatment can take longer and may require extractions or surgery. Early treatment can often prevent these procedures, ensuring a healthier smile.
If your child is 7–8 years old or has been referred by a dentist, schedule an appointment for an initial exam and guidance on the best steps for their smile.
