PATIENTS ENJOY SEDATION DENTISTRY AT BEST SMILES
It is not uncommon for adult patients to have dental fear and anxiety. Many patients will avoid their routine dental visits because they are nervous about painful treatments or another individual in their personal space. Patients with dental anxiety will want to work with a dentist in Richmond, Virginia, area, such as Dr. Naveen Chennupati of Best Smiles!
WHAT IS SEDATION DENTISTRY?
Sedation dentistry uses a sedative to relax a patient before or during their dental work to ensure they are comfortable from start to finish. There are several different types of sedation that are used at Best Smiles for patients to consider. Below are the three sedation options available to patients at the practice of Dr. Naveen Chennupati:
- Nitrous oxide – nitrous oxide is an odorless and colorless gas that has been used by dentists for decades to immediately relax and calm patients who might have dental fear and anxiety. It can be used for any dental procedure and reversed quickly with oxygen administration through the nose.
- Oral conscious sedation – another option is oral sedation dentistry, during which a prescribed medication is taken before the visit to the dental office. Patients will need to arrange transportation to and from the dental office if they choose to use this method. Patients are awake during their entire procedure but later will rest and have minimal memories of their appointment.
- IV sedation – is for patients with more severe fear of the dentist or who might have trouble sitting still for extended periods; IV sedation might be the most appropriate. Sedation medication is administered through an IV in the arm to complete extensive dental work or procedures on children.
